Runners from around the county competed in the Arkansas State Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Oaklawn Racetrack in Hot Springs. Each of the county’s three districts had runners place in the top 20, with one school bringing home a team trophy.
In the Class 1A/2A Division, Acorn High School girls brought home the runner-up trophy as a team, giving the Lady Tigers five State Runner –Up and four State Titles in the last nine years. Faith Hill led the Lady Tigers, coming in 7th, out of 98 runners with a time of 21:26, followed by Morgan Fagan in 8th and Kendra Branson in 13th. Faith Hill and Morgan Fagan both were named to the All State Team.
Other runners representing Acorn and their placings were: Brittany Wilhite, 23rd place; Sophie Jackson, 31st place; Josey Webb, 44th; Allie Strothers, 50th; Harly Dearing, 54th; and Mackenzie Goss, 58th.
In the boy’s Class 1A/2A division, Kenny Denley was Acorn’s top runner, coming in 22nd out of 159 runners with a time of 19:03. Acorn boys came in 6th out of 20 teams. Other Acorn runners and their placings were: Matthew Chaney, 37th; Aaron Baker, 39th; Brady Lyle, 47th; Jeff Lewis, 52nd; Adam Hughes, 78th; Curtis Short, 96th; and Mason Stout, 145th.
In the Class 3A championships, Keenlan Youngblood was Cossatot River’s fastest runner coming in 20th out of 124 runners with a time of 19:05. Cody Baker placed 40th; Ruben Trinidad, 71st; Daniel Zuniga, 73rd; Victor Enriquez, 94th; Sixto Agilar, 96th; Gilberto Cervantes, 102nd; Manuel Esquivel, 190th; and Brandon Lopez, 100th.
In the Class 4A High School Girls Division, Mena’s Evie Smith was the only competitor coming in 68th in a time of 26:01.
In the Class 4A High School Boys Division, Mena Bearcat Clint Buck came in 13th out of 155 runners, in a time of 17:51. Buck was followed by teammates, Joe Looney in 47th; William Shaner, 114th; Dennis Kirsch, 126th; and Alex Buidim, 144th. Buck was also named to the All-State Team and the River Valley Regional All-Star Team and will compete this Saturday, November 19th in the All-Star meet in Magazine, Arkansas.
