BY ERMA DILBECK MIZE –
There is a growing interest in starting an annual Family Reunion in Mena. Family names of Dilbeck, Bates, and Hooper, joined by other relatives with “married” names, gathered at the Pavilion in Janssen Park on Saturday, October 3, 2015. There were about thirty to forty people who came to express their interest. The time had been announced for 1:00 p.m. A few arrived late, due to other obligations. Most of them stayed all afternoon, chatting, laughing and sharing pictures. It was a fun way to get re-acquainted with relatives – or in some cases, meeting and getting acquainted for the first time. One example of meeting for the first time was Alton Dilbeck, son of A. B. Dilbeck and Erma Dilbeck Mize, son of Alvin W. Dilbeck. Alton now lives in DeQueen, enthusiastic about an annual reunion.
In addition to Polk County residents, there were family members present from Flemington, Missouri, Canyon, Texas, Ft. Worth, Texas, Ft. Smith, Arkansas, and DeQueen, Arkansas to name a few.
Nancy Kaye, who lives in Ft. Worth, Texas, Pat Harrison, who lives in Mena, along with Marilyn Coleman Gordon, who lives in Flemington, MO, worked together in getting this initial meeting in Janssen Park. Their efforts were rewarded by the interest shown and by the number who enthusiastically agreed to organize a family gathering to meet in Mena on the first Saturday in October 2016. Hopefully, the October date will become a standing date, for family members to look forward to!
