Blazes Erupt in Two-Vehicle Collision

A two-vehicle accident at the junction of Highways 71 and 88 caused both to erupt into flames and backed up Mena’s busy afterschool traffic as well on Wednesday afternoon, October 18, 2017. The accident occurred at 3:13 p.m. Mena Police Department arrived on the scene at 3:14 p.m. and dispatched the Mena Fire Department due to the fires.

Angela Hanson, age 44 of Nashville, Ark., was driving northbound on Hwy. 71 in a 2013 Nissan Altima when 69-year old James Pflaum, of Mena, pulled into the path of Hanson. Pflaum was traveling westbound on Hwy. 88 in a 1992 Chevy pick-up truck. When the vehicles collided, Pflaum was ejected and landed approximately 40-feet away, according to the report filed at the Mena Police Department. Each vehicle spun around before coming to rest and catching fire. Mena Fire personnel extinguished the flames.

Both drivers were treated for non-serious injuries and discharged from the local hospital.
