Polk County Relay for Life, on behalf of the American Cancer Society, will host their annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner on September 16, 2017 at the Mena Mountain Resort at 6 p.m.
“The Celebrity Waiter Dinner is a truly special event because it helps in our fight against cancer,” organizers said in a recent press release. “This year, more people than ever will survive cancer and fewer will hear the words ‘you have cancer.’ For those who are suffering right now and for those who may be diagnosed in the future, there is more hope now than ever before.”
That hope is prevalent very much due to the exhaustive efforts of volunteers across the country, including dozens of them here in Polk County. Through events such as the Celebrity Waiter Dinner, their annual Walk for a Cure, and the many fundraisers that lead up to the event, Polk County Relay for Life teams submitted over $70,000 in donations in 2016 that benefitted the American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer Society saves lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in ground-breaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.
As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, the American Cancer Society has contributed more than $3.4 billion. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer, and countless more who have avoided it, will be celebrating birthdays this year.
A Celebrity Waiter is someone who is willing to ‘wait’ on their family and friends during the event. Each waiter can decorate their table in their own theme and sell tickets at their table. Each ticket is $50, or buy a full table of 8 for $400. Guests can dress in the appropriate table theme as well. An important note, you can purchase as many tables as you like, or wait on as many tables as you’d like. Food is provided but will need to be set up. Tablecloths and other decorations are the waiter’s responsibility.
Waiter Awards are up for grabs and include categories such as Best Dressed Waiter, Most Entertaining, Best Table, Biggest Tips, and Celebrity of the Year (the person who raises the most in ticket sales, tips, and auction items). In addition to an auction, there is also a live DJ.
For more information on becoming a waiter or to purchase tickets, contact Celebrity Waiter Chair Regina Lawry at 479-234-1608; Celebrity Waiter Co-Chair Debbie Welch at 479-234-5058; Celebrity Waiter Co-Chair Richard Lawry at 479-234-2373; or Relay Event Chair Shelly Harvey at 479-216-3303.
Everyone is invited to participate in the fun event where waiters dress up themselves and their tables in themed attire.
