City Council Approves Rezoning Request, Firearm Purchase

BY MELANIE BUCK –

Mena City Council voted to approve a rezoning request when they met on Tuesday, February 14, for their monthly meeting. The Council unanimously approved a rezoning request for a property on Hwy. 8 East and amended two ordinances in the process. The request was made by Brandon Martin and Bridgett Martin to change their property zone from a C2/C3 to an R2.

Ordinance 2085, requiring a fence and no-build zone was attached to the C2/C3 zoning and council members included a clause in the R2 zone that if the property were ever to return to a commercial property, the ordinance requiring the fence and no-build zone would be included.

The Council also authorized advertising for bids in the proposed purchase of two new police cars and advertising for bids to remove buildings located in the right-of-way for the construction of Morgan Street that will connect Hwy. 71 to Holly Harshman Elementary.

Also approved by Mena City Council was a quote received for the purchase of 17 new service pistols for the Mena Police Department. The firearms will cost just over $7,500 and will be purchased from Cruse Uniform and Equipment in Little Rock.

Tommy Fowler was re-appointed to the Mena Water Commission for an eight-year term to expire in Feb. 2025.

Council members also approved moving the March meeting date to March 21st at 6 p.m. at Mena City Hall. The public is welcome to attend.
