Community Set to Honor Veterans Friday With Multiple Festivities Scheduled

Veteran’s Day is this Friday, November 11th, and as the day approaches, many activities have been planned to honor veterans and military personnel and their unwavering service to the United States and the citizens who live here. Local organizations and schools have arranged meals for breakfast and lunch, planned a parade, and more to thank veterans and military personnel on a day that is meant to honor them and remind the rest of the sacrifices that are made daily to insure freedom is kept on American soil.

As the day is observed across the nation, Polk County will recognize it with the following events:

Wickes Elementary will host a Veteran’s Day Tribute on Wednesday beginning at 8:15 a.m. with a special breakfast and musical program.

The Vandervoort Elementary Veteran’s Day Program will be on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Vandervoort Elementary Cafeteria. All family members, community members and veterans are invited to attend.

The 3rd Annual Mena Veteran’s Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 11th, on North Mena Street. All veterans are encouraged to participate in the parade. Trophies will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

Following the parade, a Veteran’s Day Memorial Service will he held at the Mena Elks Lodge on Hwy. 375 East.

At 11 a.m., there will be a Veteran’s Day Luncheon at the Historic Armory on DeQueen Street in Mena. The luncheon is free to veterans and their families. This year, a fish dinner with all the fixings will be served. Mena Middle School EAST is assisting with the luncheon and is seeking door prizes for the event. They are asking for items such as gift cards, hats, t-shirts, etc. Those donations can be dropped off before November 10, at Mena Middle School to Mrs. Lunsford.

Cossatot River High School FFA is sponsoring a Veteran’s Day Breakfast on Friday, from 7 a.m. – 10 a.m. in the Ag Building. All veterans and current military are invited to attend.

Umpire School will have a Veteran’s breakfast at 9 a.m. and a presentation.

Smithville School will have a Veteran’s breakfast at 8:15 a.m. on Friday.
