The Cossatot River Eagles suffered a 66-48 loss to Kirby Thursday, October 27th at Kirby High School.
The Eagles led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter; however, the wheels came off in the second quarter when Kirby outscored Cossatot River 25-5 to take a 32-15 lead at the half.
Cossatot River outscored Kirby 18-12 in the third quarter before Kirby put 22 on the scoreboard to the Eagle’s 15 in the fourth quarter to set the final score at 66-48.
“We led by three after one, then went down 17 at the half,” said Cossatot River Eagle Head Basketball Coach Wendell Cartwright. “We didn’t play well in the second quarter. We had 19 turnovers at halftime and gave up nine offensive rebounds, mostly in the second quarter.
“We came out and did a good job in the third quarter,” said Cartwright. “We cut it to 10, which is about good as you can do when you are down 17. You want to get it to something manageable. Then in the fourth quarter they outscored us 22-15.
“We didn’t block out well, said Cartwright. “The turnovers we had were primarily unforced. Just us making mistakes, not because of anything that they were doing to us, it was just us doing it to ourselves. Most of the damage was self-inflicted.
“We are a good shooting team,” said Cartwright. “But we went five for 24 from the 3-point line. We were open but just didn’t make them. But we were 15 of 18 from two-point range. We’ve got to get the ball into the paint more. We settled too much the other night for perimeter shots instead of attaching the gaps to the basket. The second quarter just destroyed us.
“They continued to fight, continued to play and did a lot of good stuff,” said Cartwright. “But against a team like Kirby, that’s really good, you’re just not going to be able to get away with a quarter where you don’t show up.”
Juan Trinidad led the Eagles with 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, with four rebounds, one assist and one steal, while Trevon Broach chipped in with nine points, a 3-pointer, four rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Cody Baker added eight points, two 3-pointers, four rebounds and dished out two assists with three steals, while Cody Brown scored eight points, with four rebounds.
Marco Ramirez scored seven points, grabbed three rebounds with three assists and a pair of steals, while Brayden Smith scored four points with three rebounds.
Keelan Youngblood pulled down two rebounds.
