BY RICK WRIGHT –
The Lady Eagles defeated the Kirby Lady Trojans 58-51 Thursday, October 27th, at Kirby High School.
Cossatot outscored Kirby 13-7 in the first quarter. Kirby edged the Lady Eagles 13-12 in the second quarter; however, Cossatot led 25-20 at the half.
The Lady Eagles edged Kirby 21-20 in the third quarter and 12-11 in the fourth to take the victory over a tough, physical Lady Trojan team.
“It was a really good start for us,” said Lady Eagle Head Basketball Coach Tyler Timms. “The kids were ready to play, you could tell all day that they had the right mind set, our intensity level was where it needed to be.
“We got out of the gate, up nine to two,” said Timms. “They played really hard. The thing I liked the most about the game was that we were mentally tough. Kirby is obviously really good. We knew they were going to make runs, and they did. We told our girls at half time, when they make a run, we’ll make a run. And we did. We got up 15 in the third quarter and they cut it down to three. Then we got it back up to 12 and held on. It was a good game, but at the end of the day it’s still just one game. We’ve got to keep getting better and keep improving.”
Kirby has always played an extremely physical style of basketball.
“That’s one of the things we had talked about,” said Timms. “We said, NO SECOND CHANCES. For the most part we did a good job limiting their second chances and we got some of our own. In particular, Harley Dearing and Rhyen Martin really rebounded well; they both had seven rebounds. We blocked out for the most part. We knew it was going to be a physical game. We watched the film on Friday and you could see us bumping the cutters, having physical blockouts and just being a mentally tough team. It was just one game, but definitely a good start. It was a good atmosphere with a lot of energy, a lot of intensity and I really like the way they competed.”
Raegan Richardson led the Lady Eagles with 23 points and three assists, while Ashlen Gonzalez scored 17 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Rhyen Martin added six points and seven boards, while Jacie Wilkerson scored six points with three rebounds.
Harley Dearing chipped in with four points and seven rebounds, while Caylee Stuart scored two points.
The Lady Eagles host the Acorn Lady Tigers Friday, November 4th, with games starting at 5:30 p.m.
