Thursday night, February 1st, the Mena Jr. Ladycats took on the Arkadelphia Jr. Lady Badgers at Jim Rackley Gymnasium. Prior to the Junior Varsity game, the Junior JV Ladycats defeated Arkadelphia 14-2.
In a booming first quarter, the Jr. Ladycats ran all over Arkadelphia, outscoring the Jr. Lady Badgers 23-2. Only ten total points were scored in the second quarter, as Arkadelphia outscored the Jr. Ladycats 6-4, to narrow Mena’s lead down to nineteen going into halftime, with the score 27-8.
Emily Wagner led the Jr. Ladycats with 7 points at halftime, as Elgas led Arkadelphia with 4 points.
In the lowest scoring quarter of the game, both teams scored just two points each in the third, leaving the score at 29-10 going into the fourth. The Jr. Lady Badgers attempted a short lived comeback in the final quarter, outscoring Mena 12-7, but fell short in the end by fourteen, 36-22.
Elgas led the Arkadelphia Jr. Lady Badgers with 9 points on the night, as Sims and Nix both scored 6 points, and Whitaker 1 point.
Gracie Lyle led the Mena Jr. Ladycats with 11 points in the game, while Grayson Fairless and Hannah Stockton chipped in 8 points each, Emily Wagner 7 points, and Ally Wright 2 points.
On Saturday, the Jr. Ladycats defeated Arkdaelphia again, in the first round of the 7-4A Jr. Basketball District Tournament on the campus of Mena High School, and on Monday, Mena took on the Nashville Jr. Scrapperettes.
