BY LEANN DILBECK –
My life has been full of reminders lately of how precious each breath and each day truly is. Between a childhood friend suddenly losing a father to a massive heart attack to reporting on car wrecks, plane crashes, and train collisions, in the blink of an eye, lives were forever changed.
It’s unfortunate, at least for me, that it takes such circumstances to remind me that we are not guaranteed tomorrow or even our next breath for that matter. They are a gift.
Whether we live to be 45 or 105, our lives are nothing more than a vapor in the wind. We are told so in James 4:14 – “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.”
If we find ourselves depressed or lazy or lethargic, isn’t that scripture incredibly motivating – hit you smack between the eyes, kick you out of your recliner, let me get busy, motivating?
There simply isn’t time to continue to use excuses for rejecting or running from Him! We can’t blame it on our childhood anymore and dysfunctional parents because let’s face it, we all are to some degree, and when surrendered to Him, He redeems and uses all of it! It can’t be all the missed opportunities as a child because your family was ‘poor’ because yes, He can use those circumstances to build character and there is no better time to know the Lord than when you are without the traps of the world. It can’t be because you spent half your life running from Him and fighting addictions because He can use your testimony and redemption story as an incredible tool to reach others… just let Him deliver you from it and then be willing to share of His victory in your life! Just OWN IT… own your life, stop blaming others, stop making excuses and take responsibility! He bought and paid for each one of us with his blood shed on the cross so we could OWN a life free from excuses and to be lived with purpose. To not live a life knowing Jesus Christ is a choice and not a result of circumstances.
Some people say it doesn’t matter where you’ve been… it only matters where you’re going. I differ in that opinion a bit because it is the path that we’ve traveled that will help to refine us just like fire to silver/gold so that when our faith has been tested, we will sparkle and shine of His glory! 1 Peter 1:7 “so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;” [Zechariah 13:9, Isaiah 48:10] I do, however, know that there is a reason that our windshields are much larger than our rear view mirrors.
We should desire to live every breath in harmony and for Him! Not a life wandering aimlessly without purpose. Not a life full of malice or greed or pride. Not a life wandering around ‘under the influence’ and numb to the world.
In the blink of an eye, a life lived chasing a dollar can suddenly come to an end and
while you may leave your family with great worldly wealth, you also left them spiritually and emotionally bankrupt from your lack of presence. In the blink of an eye, life can be forever changed and we find ourselves with no more tomorrows to make things right with others… to finally say ‘I forgive you’ or ‘I love you’ or to call in sick and spend the day with someone precious to you! In the blink of an eye, a life filled with the world but empty of godly sustenance can end, and there will be no more opportunity to cry out to the Lord and say ‘I need you!’
My parents always preached ‘why put off til tomorrow what you can do today?’ So why put off one more day living without Jesus Christ as the Lord of your life? Why put off knowing that joy and peace that comes ONLY from an intimate relationship with Him? With Him as your first priority, everything else in life falls into place.
Stop blaming others and making excuses. Own your life… own your choices… but surrender that ownership to the One who willingly laid down His for yours.
