Lady Tigers Take out Omaha, Fall to Bay; Finish Terrific Season

Wednesday night, March 1st, the Acorn Lady Tigers took on the Omaha Lady Eagles in the second round of the 2017 1A Girls Basketball State Tournament at Mount Ida High School.

The Lady Tigers started the game off on an 8-0 run before Omaha scored their first point via free throw with 2:13 left in the first quarter. Acorn went on to lead the Lady Eagles by ten, 15-5, through one. Omaha was forced to call a timeout with 5:05 left in the half after the Lady Tigers started the second quarter on a 7-0 run. Following the timeout, the Lady Eagles outscored Acorn 9-6, to make the score 28-14 at halftime.

At halftime, Sophie Jackson led the Lady Tigers with 15 points.

Coming out of the locker room after halftime, the Lady Tigers scored eight points to Omaha’s two points, but in the last 4:25 in the third quarter, the Lady Eagles outscored Acorn 18-13, to make the score 45-29 going into the final quarter of play. In the fourth quarter, Omaha outscored the Lady Tigers 27-20, and pulled within five points with under a minute left in the game, but Acorn was able to hold onto their lead and defeat the Lady Trojans by nine points, 65-56.

Sophie Jackson led the Acorn Lady Tigers with 28 points on the night, while Faith Hill scored 15 of her own, Morgan Fagan 11, Brooke Bates 6, Tori Barrett 4, and Lexi Powell 1.

With the win, the Lady Tigers advanced to the Quarterfinals of the 1A State Basketball Tournament, facing the Bay Lady Yellowjackets on Friday afternoon, March 3rd.

Both Acorn and the Lady Yellowjackets played a tight notched first quarter, but Bay’s Whitlee Layne was able to knock down a jumper in the last few seconds to give Bay a one point, 13-12, lead after one. The Lady Yellowjackets started the second quarter on a 14-6 run, forcing Acorns’ Coach Mike Jackson to call a timeout. After the timeout, Bay held up to as much as a 13 point lead, but Acorns’ Faith Hill drained a three at the buzzer, bringing the Lady Yellowjackets lead down to ten at halftime, with the score 33-23.

At the half, Faith Hill led the Lady Tigers with 8 points.

Acorn narrowed the Lady Yellowjackets’ lead down to six in the third quarter, as the Lady Tigers outscored Bay 15-11, to make the score 44-38 going into the final quarter of play. In the fourth, the Lady Tigers were never able to get within five points, as Acorn was held to only nine points, while the Lady Yellowjackets scored 13 points of their own. When the final buzzer rang, the Lady Tigers fell short in their final game of the season by a score of 57-47.

Tori Barrett and Faith Hill led the Acorn Lady Tigers with 11 points a piece on the night, as Morgan Fagan and Sophie Jackson chipped in 8, Brooke Bates 6, and Makayla Anderson 3.

According to MaxPreps.com, the Lady Tigers finish their season with an overall record of 29-9.

Congratulation to Coach Mike Jackson, and seniors Brittany Wilhite, Harly Dearing and Morgan Fagan, as well as the rest of the Lady Tigers on a terrific 2017 season.
