The Mena Ladycats made quick work of their 4A South Regional opponents, defeating the three teams they played 35-2.
The Ladycats defeated DeWitt High School,10-0, in the opening round, behind the no-hit pitching of sophomore Lexi Brooks. Brooks tossed five innings with a total of 56 pitches, 42 for strikes, and 14 balls. Brooks faced 16 batters, didn’t allow a hit, walked one and struck-out nine.
Brooks also led the Ladycats offensively, going three-for-three with a single and a pair of doubles, while senior Bailey Bunch went two-for-two with a single and a triple. Junior Daryan Torix went two-for-three with a single and a home run. Brooks picked up three RBI’s, while Torix knocked in two runs.
The Ladycats bats remained hot, as they defeated Nashville 12-2, in the semifinals. After trailing two to zero after two innings, Mena put a five-spot on the board in the bottom of the third. Bunch hit an RBI double, juniors Kenzi Spurgin and Kristen Kesterson each hit two-run singles, while senior Lexi Hansard had an RBI double. Hansard led the Ladycats on the day, going three-for-four with four RBI’s. Bunch and Spurgin each went two-for-four with a pair of RBI’s.
Junior Jordan Ward picked up the two-hit, 12-2 victory from the circle. Ward faced 26 batters in six innings, struck out nine, and walked four. Ward threw 96 pitches, 62 for strikes and 34 for balls.
The Ladycats dominated Bauxite in the 4A South Regional Championship, with a 13-0 shutout. Mena scored at least one run in the bottom of every inning. The Ladycats went up 2-0 after the first inning, 8-0 after the second, 12-0 after the third, and 13-0 after the bottom of the fourth inning.
Junior Macy Brotherton wasted no time putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning with one swing of the bat. Macy Brotherton hit a two-run bomb to left field. Macy Brotherton went on to tally five RBI’s on just two hits, going two-for-four on the day. Macy Brotherton also hit a double with the bases loaded to add the other three runs batted in to her total. Offensively, Bunch went three-for-three, Torix went two-for-two, and Hansard went two-for-three with two RBI’s, while Ward, Kesterson, and junior Madi Brotherton each had one hit on the day.
Brooks threw five scoreless innings, faced 19 batters, walked one, struck out five, and allowed just two hits. Brooks threw a total of 68 pitches, 46 for strikes and 22 for balls.
After taking the 4A South Regional Tournament, the Ladycats returned home for the 4A State Tournament.
