Local Organizations Help Children’s Art Programs

BY BARBARA M TOBIAS –

Mena Art Gallery is able to present several programs to encourage children to develop their artistic talents, thanks in large part to several local organizations.

McDonald’s of Mena has helped to finance the annual Children’s Art Competition for several years. The 2014 show is scheduled to begin February 26, 2014. A panel of local artists volunteer the hours it takes to hang the work on the gallery walls and to judge the show.

Niki Dempsey, a talented artist with extensive experience teaching children, gives of her time and expertise once a month to teach a class where 6 to 12 year olds learn how much fun art can be in addition to coming to understand just what art is. The next class will be held in January.

Recently the Lioness Club held their annual event to raise money for the many charities they support. This one took the form of a wine tasting at Spinelli’s where many of our local artists donated pieces of their work for an auction and displayed many additional pieces. $250 of the money raised was given to Mena Art Gallery to support children’s programs.

And certainly not least, dozens of people give their time to staff the gallery, keep the books, maintain the website, and do all the other tasks necessary to make beautiful art available to everyone here.

Thanks to all of you, Mena Art Gallery is able to continue bringing art to Mena and making a considerable contribution to our local economy. If you have not completed your holiday shopping, stop by the gallery at 607 Mena Street (11 to 2 pm on Tuesdays, 10 to 3 pm Wednesdays through Saturdays): the entire gallery is featuring unique work by local artists that makes wonderful gifts.
