Thursday night, February 1st, the Mena Jr. Bearcats basketball team hosted the Arkadelphia Jr. Badgers at Jim Rackley Gymnasium. Before the Junior Varisty game, the Junior High JV Bearcats fell short to Arkadelphia 23-11
In what played out to be a close game most of the night, Mena narrowly outscored the Jr. Badgers 12-9 in the first quarter. The Jr. Bearcats pulled away for a bit in the second, outscoring Arkadelphia 11-5, to take a nine point, 23-14, lead into halftime.
At the half, Harris led the Jr. Badgers with 5 points, as Mason Brotherton led Mena with 9 points.
The Jr. Badgers narrowed down Mena’s lead to one point in the third quarter, outscoring the Jr. Bearcats 11-3, to make the score 26-25 going into the fourth. Arkadelphia took the lead with 5:40 left in the game, but with a bucket from Brotherton, the Jr. Bearcats retook the lead and didn’t look back. Mena went on to outscore the Jr. Badgers 9-5, to win the game by five, 35-30.
Wheeler led the Arkadelphia Jr. Badgers with 11 points in the game, while Harris and Mcanally added on 5 points each, McClure 4 points, Ware 3 points, and Phifer 2 points.
Mason Brotherton led the Mena Jr. Bearcats with 13 points on the night, as Max Montgomery scored 10 points of his own, Matthew McCravens and Jake Wiles 4 points each, and Sam Efird and Caleb Peters 2 points each.
On Monday night, February 5th, the Jr. Bearcats played in the second round of the 7-4A Jr. Basketball Tournament at the Union Bank Center.
