Officers with the Mena Police Department are currently investigating an officer-related shooting that occurred around 12 p.m. today on the corner of Reeves and Reine Streets in Mena.
According to witnesses, the incident began with what appeared to be a routine traffic stop. The Arkansas State Police have now released a statement saying that the suspect involved in the shooting, Shawn Henry Allen Dickens, age 30, was pronounced dead at Mena Regional Health System. Mena Police Chief Brandon Martin added that two investigations are currently underway, “The Arkansas State Police is investigating the shooting and an internal investigation as to whether policy was followed.”
The statement released by ASP says that during the encounter between the suspect and the officer, a physical altercation evolved, leading to the suspect fleeing on-foot and dropping a handgun. Initial statements from police indicate the fleeing suspect turned to pick-up the gun and simultaneous commands were reportedly given by police for the man to stop and move away from the gun. The commands were reportedly ignored leading to the police officer firing his gun.
Also on the scene were members of the Polk County Sheriff’s Department and the 18th West Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Authorities can not release any other information at this time in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and the case.
