Polk County 911 dispatch sent out a call around 4:40 a.m. Friday morning, January 5, 2018, regarding a structure fire on Edgewood Lane in Mena. Dispatch informed the authorities that a woman had called the fire in and had reported her granddaughter was still trapped inside the home.
Mena Police Department Officer Mike Wolf was the first to arrive on the scene and was followed shortly after by Officer Paul Arceneaux. Wolf heard a woman screaming from the home and entered through the front door. However, once inside, he was unable to hear the woman. Wolf stepped back outside the home and heard the woman clearly again from the rear of the home. Officers Wolf and Arceneaux made their way to the back exterior of the home where they located the reporting party and owner of the home, Glenda Lunsford, and her 12-year old granddaughter trying to escape through a back window. The officers helped the pair exit the window.
EMS arrived and both victims were transported to Mena Regional Medical Center where they were stabilized before being airlifted with burn and smoke inhalation injuries. Their condition at this time is unknown.
Mena Fire Department personnel put out the blaze that was located in the center of the home. Fire Chief Steve Egger reported moderate smoke damage to the home as well as fire and water damage. Fire personnel cleared the scene around 5:30 a.m.
Egger said the exact cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation.
