The Mena Bearcat baseball team hosted the Ashdown Panthers at Union Bank Field Monday night, March 27th.
Ian Martin started the game on the mound for the Bearcats. Mena allowed only one early run, but gave up six two-out runs in the first. Ashdown held an early 7-0 lead after half an inning. Ashdown retired the Bearcats one-two-three in the bottom of first, to hold in place their seven run lead after one complete inning.
Landon Stidman came out to pitch in the top of the second and retired Ashdown, allowing only one run to the Panthers. Jon Beckman led off the bottom of the second for the Bearcats with a double down the right field line. Beckman’s courtesy runner was able to reach third base, but never scored. The score was 8-0 Ashdown after two innings.
Mena sent out Stidman in the top of the third inning for another inning of work. Stidman allowed three runs before escaping the inning, to extend the Panther’s lead to11. Ashdown’s pitcher, Logan Henry, retired the Bearcats in order, again, in the bottom of the third. Henry held Mena scoreless and Ashdown’s lead at 11-0.
In the top of the fourth, the Bearcats brought in CJ Brown to pitch. Brown allowed just two runs, to get Mena out of the inning down by 13. The Bearcats got a runner on base in the bottom of the fourth, but Ashdown turned a slick double play to end the inning. Retaining the Panthers 13-0 lead after four complete innings.
In the last inning, Kyndon Schuller pitched for the Bearcats and gave up only one Panther run. Making the score 14-0 going into the final half inning of the game. The Panthers kept Mena scoreless yet again in the fifth inning, preserving Ashdown’s 14-0 lead to win the game.
Ashdown held the Bearcats to only one hit the entire game with zero errors, while Mena gave up 11 hits to the Panthers and committed three errors.
