Purple Heart Ceremony Held At Polk County Courthouse

(MENA) Polk County Judge Brandon Ellison declared in a proclamation on Friday, March 29th, that Polk County shall be designated as a PURPLE HEART COUNTY.

The designation comes on the same day that the Vietnam War Veterans Day, was being celebrated in a proclamation by the City of Mena, the State of Arkansas and by the federal government.

The Purple Heart was the first American service award or decoration made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded or paid the ultimate sacrifice in combat with a declared enemy of the United States of America.

The Purple Heart Medal was initially called the Badge of Military Merit, by the country’s first President, George Washington, in 1782.
