BY RUDY TIMMERMAN –
Time is rapidly getting close for the annual Ouachita Little Theatre spring musical, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka. Many readers may have heard that Annie would be the musical. However, in order to produce these shows OLT must apply for, receive, and pay for the rights for the show. Usually the only obstacle we face is to raise the $2500 it costs for the rights. However, this year was a different story. We were not able to get the rights to the show we originally selected, Annie. We always want to produce a family friendly musical that young and old can enjoy. While Annie would fit the bill, even more, so does our newly selected show, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka. We have acquired the rights from Music Theater International in New York and are ready to proceed. This year’s show will be directed by Rudi Timmerman with Judy Kropp as music director.
The stage show closely follows the book and film versions of Charley and The Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder and more recently Johnny Depp. Charlie, the Oompa-Loompas, Grandpa Joe, and the whole cast of characters will be there. You will surely enjoy the familiar songs like Candy Man and Pure Imagination as well as the 22 other songs in this show. We will need 13 Adults for major roles. They should be age appropriate as parents or grandparents. Seven of the adults are male and six are female. All have singing roles both solo and ensemble. There are also 4 major roles for boys who can pass for ages 9 to 15 and 3 girls who can pass for ages 9 to 15. There are an additional 20 or more other roles. These are mostly for children but additional adults in minor roles are also needed. Go to our Willy Wonka website: www.oltwillywonka.com for more information.
Auditions will be held Wednesday, February 19 — 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm (later by arrangement), Thursday, February 20 — 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and Saturday, February 22 — 9:00 am to Noon. Other times can be scheduled by special arrangement. Contact Rudi (479-243-5903), Judy (479-234-3902), Jeffery (479-243-0042), or email Rudi at email@example.com. These are open auditions. All roles will be selected based on the auditions. There are no predetermined parts.
Willy Wonka will be performed at the OLT for two weekends: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 25, 26, and 27 and Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, May 1, 2, and 4. Please note that there will be no Saturday performance the second weekend due to a conflict with a Mena High School activity. Advanced reserved tickets will be available for all shows later in April.
