You Wanted Change…

BY  MICHAEL REISIG –

Having followed the news for the last week I find myself discouraged, at best, for the survival of the nation we once knew. True to his 2008 promise of “fundamental change in America” President Obama and his executive agencies (which includes the Internal Revenue Service, Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, and others) have pursued the most aggressive and unprecedented seizure of regulatory and executive authority in American history.

It was announced this week that our president’s signature work, Obamacare, which was supposed to epitomize the concept of governmental stewardship, has been unilaterally changed 18 times by the Obama administration without congressional review and approval. Can anyone say, El Presidente?

This week Walt Disney World has apparently decided to drop the Florida Boy Scouts council as a recognized charity for its employees. The policy change, announced months after the national scouting organization said it would accept openly gay Scouts but preserve a ban on gay adult leaders, means Walt Disney World will no longer offer the Scouting council or its units grant funding – apparently a signal that the BSA decision, by keeping the adult ban, did not go far enough. What a shame that prejudice often demands all or nothing.

Early this week, Fort Carson Army Base leaders in Colorado launched an investigation into a viral web “selfie” photo of a Fort Carson soldier who said she was hiding in her car to avoid saluting the flag. Pfc. Tariqka Sheffey, of the post’s 43rd Sustainment Group posted the image to her Instagram account with a caption that read, “This is me laying back in my car hiding so I don’t have to salute the 1700 flag. Keep all your ‘thats so disrespectful/howrude/etc.’ comments to yourself cuz, right now, I don’t give an obscenity).” America’s new military – doesn’t it just give you goose bumps?

This week, President Obama presented his choice for the next Surgeon General of the United States.  Dr. Vivek Murthy is the co-founder of Doctors for America, a project of the highly liberal “Center for American Progress.” Most believe the primary policy goals of Dr. Murthy’s organization will be focused on advancing stricter gun control laws and promoting the Affordable Care Act. I guess that shouldn’t surprise any of us. Republican Senator Rand Paul says, “Murthy has already disqualified himself from being Surgeon General because of his intent to use that position to launch an attack on Americans’ right to own a firearm under the guise of a public health and safety campaign.” Another win for no-gunners everywhere.

An audit released this week confirms the Obama administration regularly offers breaks for businesses that hire illegal immigrants, reducing their fines by an average of 40 percent from what they should be. Come one, come all, and get your voter registration card!

President Obama announced plans this week for the unveiling his “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative. This effort will take action with foundations, businesses, and others to make sure that every young man of color will be offered advancement and employment opportunities (above everyone else). Aside from all the politically correct hoopla, this is one of the first times, since prior to the Civil War, a president has decided that truly separating Americans based on the color of their skin, is a good thing for everyone – Caucasian men and women need not apply.

Just another week, sailing along in America. Can anyone say “Titanic?”

  1. One of the things that irritates me the most about today’s political climate – and Mr. Reisig’s increasing stridency – is this notion that everything wrong with the country is because we elected one of “them” as President. “Them”, of course, is variously defined but the blame is always laid off on that Muslim/Socialist/Commie/Terrorist/Tyrant/****** Obama.

I seem to have lost less of my memory than some other old farts, but the first time I heard “national security” used as an excuse for warrantless surveillance of American citizens was under the Democrat Lyndon Johnson – followed by the Republican Richard Nixon who did even more of it. And to be honest, it had been going on even before the FBI Director who served under Presidents of both parties made a cottage industry out of tapping phones and breaking into offices – warrants? – we don’t need no stinkin’ warrants!

I’m not trying to be flip, but I am poking fun at the silliness that passes for political commentary lately. We’ve been electing and tolerating politicians who put their own interests first for generations; Wall Street has been buying politicians since nobody even tried to keep it a secret. The first time I met Bill Clinton – before he ever ran for governor – I thought he was the phoniest politician I had met, and he’s had plenty of competition. You want to talk about defying the law and trading with the enemy? What did St. Ronnie Reagan know and when did he forget it? Torturing prisoners and warrantless wiretapping without cause? Seems like that started under W’s watch.

Obama has been a total disappointment, I agree. But where I fault him is in going to Washington and going native. Almost every crime Reisig and company accuse him of continues trends and practices that have been going on for decades, and getting worse with every new administration, Democrat and Republican. Are we just now noticing because we have one of “them” to blame it on?

It’s going to take more than getting rid of Obama. It’s going to take more than throwing the bums out. Most of us are more careful when we hire a plumber to fix the commode than we are when we hire someone to run the country, the state or the county – and these are the people who have our futures and our children’s futures in their hands.

Read Reisig’s rantings if you want, or listen to Rush or Glen or whoever’s on the radio if you find them entertaining. But if you want to find solutions for what’s wrong with the country, always remember that entertainment is all they’re selling. What is needed is for every one of us to remember that the country belongs to all of us, to begin talking to those who aren’t like us and working together to find real solutions instead of just easy scapegoats.

That doesn’t mean that plenty don’t need to go to jail, and plenty more should probably be knocked in the head. But there should be enough of us from every point on the spectrum who sincerely want the country to work as well as it should – as soon as we realize it and start acting like it.
