Acorn Elementary School will be holding a Tree Planting Ceremony on Mon., Oct. 15 beginning at 1 p.m. in the Elementary Gym.
The school was chosen for the STOP (Shade Trees on Playgrounds) program after Library Media Specialist Kim Posey wrote a grant to receive shade trees for the school’s playground.
The STOP program is a part of the Arkansas Forestry Commission and was designed to help prevent skin cancer by providing shade trees to playgrounds.
The 2018 STOP program is accepting applications through May 18 for Arkansas schools needing additional shade on their playgrounds.
Winning schools receive five shade trees, mulch, watering supplies and planting guidelines to help make the venture successful.
