J.D. “Jay” Powell, Jr., age 72 of Mena, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.
Jay was born in Mena, Arkansas on December 30, 1944 to the late J.D. Powell, Sr., and Murl Dean Beyers Powell. He was married to Janice Aynes Powell for 44 years. Jay lived in California and Arkansas most of his life. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp., and served two tours in the Vietnam War. After serving his country, he moved back to California and eventually moved back to Arkansas. He worked at U. S. Motors and FM Dix until he retired in 2005 due to health reasons. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years. He was a member of the Dallas Avenue Baptist Church and most of all he loved God and his family. His grandchildren were what he lived for and loved them very much. He will be dearly missed and was a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin and friend to all.
He is survived by wife, Janice Powell of Mena, Arkansas; sons, Jeremy Powell and wife Amber of Mena, Arkansas, Justin Powell and wife Dana of Mena, Arkansas; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Geary Powell of Gillham, Arkansas; cousin, Joyce Bogorno of Fresno, California; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Destry White, and two sons, Jason Damon Powell and Joseph Powell.
Memorial service with Military Honors will be Saturday August 12, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at Dallas Avenue Baptist Church with Brother Roy Conaster and Brother Justin Leonard officiating. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Beasley Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
