The local branch of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, commonly known as the VFW, received a national award recently for their hardwork and dedication to a particular project. The Frank C. Bainum Post #4451 was the lead sponsor for bringing The Wall That Heals, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., to Mena last spring.
The event allowed thousands of visitors from several states to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War, and a chance to view the memorial without requiring travel to Washington, D.C. It also honored the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War and gave veterans of the war a chance to begin their healing process.
The efforts of VFW Post #4451 garnered a National VFW Merit Award – the second highest award a post can be bestowed. Linda Johnson, Commandant of Post #4451, attended a ceremony in Jacksonville, Arkansas to receive the plaque. “We were quite surprised and honored,” said Johnson.
