The First Day Hike tradition

We are pleased that so many people have made First Day Hikes an annual tradition! It is exciting for Arkansas to be such a strong participant in this nationwide event occurring in all 50 state park systems. First Day Hikes are focused on healthy habits and lifelong memories.

This year for First Day Hikes we will offer guided hikes at many Arkansas State Parks, as well as encourage self-guided walks and hikes on the “New Year Weekend,” (Dec. 30-Jan. 1) for those who would like to explore on their own.

Visit our event calendar to see scheduled guided First Day Hikes.

Queen Wilhelmina State Park

Meeting Place: Wonder House Parking Lot
9:00 am – 10:30 am
Admission: Free
Join people all over the United States by spending the first day of the new year hitting the trails. First Day Hikes are a nationwide initiative to encourage people to spend time in nature. Join a park interpreter for a stroll along the Spring Trail. The Spring Trail is an easy 1-mile meandering trail on the north side of the mountain with plenty of beautiful valley views. Hikers must wear close-toed shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Be sure to bring plenty of water and a thirst for adventure. #ArStateParks #FirstDayHikes
OR
Meeting Place: South Side Lover’s Leap Trailhead
2:00 pm – 3:30 pm
Admission: Free
Join people all over the United States by spending the first day of the new year hitting the trails. First Day Hikes are a nationwide initiative to encourage people to spend time in nature. Join a park interpreter on the 1.3-mile Lover’s Leap Trail for a blood-pumping hike with amazing views. Much of the Lover’s Leap Trail is difficult due to elevation changes, rocky areas, and steep slopes. Hikers must wear proper close-toed shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Be sure to bring plenty of water. #ArStateParks #FirstDayHikes

Cossatot River State Park

Meeting Place: Harris Creek Trailhead
10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Start your New Year off on the right (or left) foot and join us for a First Day Hike at Cossatot River State Park – Natural Area! We will be hiking the beautiful 3-mile Harris Creek Trail, where you will experience a walk through beautiful hardwoods up to a bluff that gives you a spectacular view of the Cossatot River. This trail is moderately difficult, so please wear sturdy, closed toe shoes and weather appropriate clothing. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water. #FirstDayHikes

You can receive a free “Hike Arkansas State Parks” sticker one of two ways:

  • Go on a guided hike at a state park on January 1 and receive a sticker at the program.
  • Self-guided hikers can log their New Year Weekend (Dec. 30-Jan. 1) hikes in Arkansas State Parks by filling out a form and we will send a free sticker to each person in your group by mail. An entry form link will be available here starting Dec. 30.
  • Recreate Responsibly

Please plan to recreate responsibly and remember:

    • When the parking lot is full, the park is full. We encourage you to consider planning your hikes on less-visited trails or off-peak times of the day. Consider having a Plan B in place.
    • Dress for the weather. Wear and bring warm layers and sturdy shoes. In winter the breeze can make it seem even colder: Plan to bring extra gloves, hats, and layers even if you think don’t need them.
    • Bring water and snacks.
    • Avoid hiking if you are experiencing cold, flu, or COVID symptoms.
    • Stay on designated trails. Shortcuts cause damage and are unsafe.
    • Practice Leave No Trace principles.

    Share Your First Day Hikes

We also want to share your First Day Hike experiences. You can upload your photos and/or videos here with our uploader tool. Use #ARStateParks and #FirstDayHikes when sharing on social media too!

Hikers are encouraged to log their completed hikes and miles that take place in Arkansas State Parks on those days here. (You will see a form posted on Jan. 1st.) We are excited to discover how many hikers cover how many miles in our state parks that weekend! And, we will send a free Arkansas State Park hiking sticker to each person in your group!

Note: One person can fill out the form for the whole group and select the number of people in your group and list the people (first name is fine) in your group in the “Tell Us About Your Experience” box so they are included in your First Day Hike experience.
