A 56-year old Texas man was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith on Wednesday afternoon following an ATV accident on Forest Service Road 31 between Shady and Vandervoort.
Polk County Emergency Management Director James Reeves said that the man was riding with a group when he misjudged a curve and slid off of the side of the road. When sliding off of the road, the 4-wheeler he was driving struck a tree, sending the driver down a rocky hillside, landing about 30 feet beyond the ATV. Rescuers had to make use of a Stokes basket and a winch to retrieve the driver who was airlifted with injuries to his left shoulder, left arm, and a fracture to his lower left leg.
