Mena Bearcat Signs with McNeese State University of the Southland Conference…

(MENA)  Zion Barnes signed a National Letter of Intent on Monday afternoon, in front of many of his Bearcats football teammates and other classmates.

Barnes had two distinct possibilities of playing football in college, both as a Cowboy. But, in the end Barnes decided to choose the school that would give him immediate starting possibilities, McNeese State in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The other school on his radar was at OSU.

Barnes is a 6’2”, 240 pound Defensive Lineman , who recorded 92 tackles in the 2018 season, averaging 8.4 tackles per game.

His defensive prowess garnered him 18 tackles alone against Pottsville, 11 tackles against Gentry and Dover, and recording another ten tackles against Hot Springs.

Barnes was a problem for most quarterbacks last season, recording ten hurried up passes and causing two fumbles for the Bearcats.

According to Bearcat Head Football Coach, Tim Harper, “Barnes amassed around 170 tackles during his four year play for the Bearcats.”

Harper praised the hardwork that he put into his success while a Bearcat. Showing up in the weight room early and being chased out by the coaches. Harper added “Barnes would often record himself working out” trying to find out what he could do to improve his conditioning efforts.
