First grade students from Polk County attended the clinic. Each class received a teddy bear to take on the tour and back to their classroom.
The students named their bear and created a scenario about the bear’s injury or illness. As the classes traveled through different departments within the facility, nurses, therapists and department directors “treated” the teddy bears and discussed some of the things they might experience if they visited the hospital.
The Emergency Department, Radiology, Rehab, and Labor and Delivery participated in the tour.
The goal of the Teddy Bear Clinic is, not only to educate students about ways the hospital treats and cares for patients, but to also ease their fears in case they have to visit the facility in an emergent situation.
