Mount Ida Lions played the Bearden Bears in the first round of the Regional 1A-4 tournament in Bradley Thursday morning. The Lions started the bottom of the first with a home run by Jacob Woodfield and did not let up.
The Lions faced a very good pitcher but made him throw 20-25 pitches more than Mount Ida pitched. (No lineup for Bearden was made available to announcer David White.)
Come the 3rd inning, it would appear Bearden purposely walked Jacob Woodfield, who has been hot the past few games with his hitting and homeruns.
Pitcher Caleb White held the Bears to two runs as the Lions won 7-2. Both White and Woodfield have had excellent games in the playoffs, beginning with the District tournaments.
An error led to the two points Bearden scored in the 3rd with a dropped fly ball setting up the runners on 1st and second. Another single plated both runners. The Lions held the lead 3-2.
After Bearden’s first batter was thrown out at first, the Lions got a double play in the fourth. Chandler Perkins got on base for the Lions, followed by Jacob Woodfield hitting a double and plating Perkins. Two outs later with two on base, both runners stole second and third. Cain McCullough hit one to the wall, allowing Woodfield and Cecil Rowton to score. Albert Petty hit a single and plated McCullough. Petty was thrown out on the next play off a Ramsey Gilbert single. The Lions were ahead 7-2 at the bottom of the fourth, which is how the game ended after the top of the seventh inning.
The Lions will take on the Hampton Bulldogs, winner of Thursday’s game between the Kirby Trojans and the Hampton. The game will be played from Taylor, Arkansas, at noon on Friday and can be heard on KQOR 105.3. See the brackets at Scorebook Live.
[UPDATE 5/05/23 – Due to weather delays, the game was pushed back to 2 p.m. It has since been pushed to 3 p.m.]
