Area Prepares for Predicted Winter Weather Storm

With vivid memories of the Christmas 2000 ice storm, area residents began preparing for a well-predicted winter weather storm expected to hit today. Store shelves were beginning to show the impact as shoppers scrambled for the essentials, as the photo illustrates, with forecasts predicting extended power outages possible.

It has also forced the postponement of the Mena Christmas Festival until December 13.  The Mena Choir Concert scheduled for this evening has been postponed until December 10 and additional cancellations and delays are expected. MyPulseNews.com will report those as we are notified.

The current forecast from the National Weather Service is:

  • Today – Rain before noon, then rain or freezing rain between noon and 2pm, then freezing rain after 2pm. Temperature falling to around 28 by 5pm. North wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime ice accumulation of 0.1 to 0.2 of an inch possible.
  • Tonight – Rain or freezing rain before 3am, then freezing rain between 3am and 5am, then sleet after 5am. Low around 27. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of 0.4 to 0.6 of an inch possible. New sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Friday – Snow and sleet. High near 31. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of around an inch possible.
  • Friday Night – Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. Wind chill values as low as 4. North northeast wind 5 to 10 mph.
  • Saturday – A slight chance of sleet after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 30. East northeast wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
  • Saturday Night – A chance of sleet. Cloudy, with a low around 24. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
  • Sunday – Freezing rain and sleet likely before 1pm, then a chance of rain or freezing rain between 1pm and 5pm, then a chance of freezing rain after 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 32. East wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
  • Sunday Night – Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the evening.
  • Monday – Mostly sunny, with a high near 29. North northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
  • Monday Night – Partly cloudy, with a low around 9.
  • Tuesday – Sunny, with a high near 29.
  • Tuesday Night – Mostly clear, with a low around 12.
  • Wednesday – Sunny, with a high near 39

  1. Where were the churches when people really needed them to keep warm and fed during the black out?? Makes me wonder where our contributions go.
