MENA, AR – Thursday, February 20, 2014, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) James K. Polk Chapter selected Mena High School senior Madison Sherrer as first-place winner in a Good Citizen Program and Scholarship contest. Sherrer’s essay was entitled “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: How Does One’s Personal Heritage Affect One’s Duties to Our Nation?” Sherrer receives a monetary prize, certificate, pin, and wallet card at a later date. Her parents are Paulette and Clifton Sherrer. Runners-up were senior Valerie Nicole Chaney of Cossatot River High School and senior Hunter Sanders of Caddo Hills High School; who each received a monetary prize, certificate, pin, and wallet card.
The tradition of giving the Good Citizen Program began many years ago. Today seniors at most Arkansas high schools submit essays in the annual competition, with local first-place winners ultimately competing for state and national scholarships. School counselor Pam Gross coordinated with Mena High faculty in Sherrer’s selection in recognition of her qualities of good character, including dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
