The annual Seed Spitting Contest was back in swing for the 5th grade students at Holly Harshman Elementary. The students worked on a variety of measurement skills. They estimated the weight, the circumference, and the length of the watermelon. They also estimated the number of seeds in their slice of watermelon along with how far they would be able to spit the seed. After all the estimations were completed, the students discovered the actual weight, circumference, and length of the melon. Finally, the most enjoyable part of all…The students ate the watermelon, saved some seeds, and spit the seeds. Our Fifth Grade Seed Spitting Winners were as follows: 1st place – Andrew White, 2nd place – Ryan Donelson, and 3rd place – William Finck. All students seemed to enjoy the learning experience. A huge “THANK YOU” goes to James’ Foods for donating the watermelons for the math activity.
