As we pause on this day, remembering the almost 3,000 victims of that horrific day, residents at Mena’s Peachtree Assisted Living Facility are using the day as a Day of Service, packing care packages for Arkansas’ only unit still currently deployed in the Middle East as a direct result of the terrorist acts that occurred that day on American soil.
In February of this year, 49 soldiers of DET 1 CO B 449th ASB were ordered to active duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and reported to Ft. Hood, Texas for training and validation.
While at the Mobilization site, the DET linked up with the command section of the 449th. After validation of individual training and SRP, the 449th Aviation Support Battalion conducted a Combined Training Exercise (CTE). Company B 449th ASB received an “outstanding” evaluation in all areas with an emphasis in Downed Aircraft Recovery (DART).
On April 2, the ASB deployed to Kuwait and began Aircraft Maintenance operations. Soldiers from Bravo Company have traveled TDY to Afghanistan and United Arab Emirates in support of Aviation missions. They also conducted on board ship operations in conjunction with the Navy and Army Attack Aviation Battalion and multiple missions to deploy/re-deploy aircraft by airlift with the Air Force.
As we remember the victims of this day, let us also remember our men and women in all uniforms who continue to serve and protect.
