ABC Denies Beer Garden Request by Fraternal Order of Eagles

BY LEANN DILBECK

A special called meeting of the Mena City Council was cancelled today after notification was received from the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) board that a request from a local non-profit organization was not permissible. The ABC is the governing body over all liquor licenses issued within the state of Arkansas.

The local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Eagles had requested permission from the City of Mena last week to have a beer garden on Sherwood Avenue to build the tourism industry. The Eagles have a private club liquor license.

Mayor George McKee expressed his reservations regarding the permission but sought advisement from the full City Council and the ABC but it was  ultimately the ABC who determined that the organization’s current liquor license does not permit them to serve alcohol in a dry county outside their premises.
