Arkansas Geologist Sandra Chandler presented Arkansas Rocks and Minerals at Cove Branch Library Wednesday, July 29th to an enthusiastic group of children, teenagers, and adults. Rocks and minerals specific to Polk County such as tuff, calcite, quartz, muscovite mica, barite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, sandstone, shale, chert, novaculite, conglomerate, bituminous coal, and breccia were highlighted. Participants received rock samples, posters, and booklets. Rock identification techniques were explained and demonstrated, including touch, scratch, acid, and taste tests. The diversified uses of rocks and minerals in current manufacturing as well as in historical instances were discussed. Geologist Chandler will repeat the program at Polk County Library in Mena at 1 p.m., Wednesday, August 5.
