Armed Forces Celebrated in Janssen Park

The 3rd annual Armed Forces Day Picnic was held by the Democratic Party of Polk County on Saturday, May 20, 2017 in Janssen Park. Jo Lee Erickson, Chair of the Democratic Party of Polk County, said they had around 30 in attendance this year and plan to continue the annual event each year. “We want to do something to support the community that supports us and show gratitude to those who serve in the Armed Forces,” said Erickson.

Armed Forces Day has been observed in the United States since 1950 and was created to honor all five military branches – Army, Navy, Marine, Coast Guard, and Air Force. It is celebrated every May 20th.

“We were thankful that the rain held out for us,” Erickson said of the looming forecast. Instead, a great time was had by all as they enjoyed both original songs and American classics played by Rick Gerard, and Shannon’s Custom Celebrations painted patriotic faces. Free hot dogs were also enjoyed.

Erickson hopes the event grows each year, as it is free to all, not just military. If you are interested in participating in next year’s event, or if you’d like more information on the Democratic Party of Polk County, they meet each second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at Papa’s Mexican Café. All are welcome to attend.
