The Polk County Sheriffs Office and Sheriff-Elect Scott Sawyer is proud to announce that Deputy Steve Fortner has been selected as the Mena Elk’s Lodge #781 Deputy of the Month for September 2016. Brian Thompson, Mena Elks Exalted Ruler, presented Deputy Fortner with a Certificate of Recognition and a gift certificate to the Chopping Block Steak House.
Thompson said this is the first month for the Elks to recognize an Deputy of the Month and will continue to do so from now on. “When you see what’s been going on on the TV with the rap that police get, well, blue lives matter and they need recognition for the service and commitment they have for our county,” said Thompson.
The Elks plans to recognize one Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy each month and at the end of the year, will recognize and Deputy of the Year. Each officer will receive a certificate of recognition for the service they performed that month and a gift card with a ‘plus one’ so they can go have dinner with their spouse or a friend.
Sheriff-Elect Scott Sawyer said, “I’d like to thank the Mena Elks Lodge and Brian Thompson for starting their Deputy of the Month program. It’s a great way to recognize our Law Enforcement Officers and the sacrifices they make serving their community.” Deputy Fortner has been with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for four years. Sawyer said he works extremely hard and is always willing to lend a hand. “He works a lot of financial crimes and has been instrumental in solving several forgeries recently. His hard work and dedication have resulted in several convictions and the recovery of thousands of dollars in restitution for the victims.”
Thompson explained that the idea came to them after hearing of the planning of the Lea Memorial Dinner. “We really appreciate what they do and we would like to honor them also.”
