The Humane Society of the Ouachitas (HSO) was able to provide a dream come true for one boy this Christmas season. Pepsi, a two-year old female Pit Bull was a stray that was found in Cove and surrendered to HSO on November 11th and little did she know, she was soon to become man’s best friend to one special little boy.
Nicki Bradley from Paris, Arkansas recently visited an adoption event at Petco in Fort Smith looking to adopt a dog for her 11-year old son, Will Collins. HSO routinely transports animals to such adoption events. Will always wanted a dog, however he was unable to have one due to a diagnosis of cancer and a bone marrow transplant. Will was first diagnosed with Leukemia at age seven and was unable to attend school last year for risk of infection. His mother met with his doctor unbeknownst to Will and cleared permission for him to have a dog. She decided to adopt Pepsi and give her to Will as a Christmas present.
Incoming HSO President, Michael Povey said he delivered the dog two weeks before Christmas and Pepsi stayed with relatives until Christmas morning. Will’s mom, Nicki, said the picture of Will’s “huge smile and a very content puppy tells it all.” Povey also said that HSO is proud to have been a part of bringing joy to a child’s heart while providing good a home for a sheltered dog. They are also happy to report that Will has been cleared to go back to school this semester.
