BY BRAD STOREY –
This weekend and next, we’ll see the presentation of two plays each night presented by JOLT (Junior Ouachita Little Theatre) at the OLT. First each night will be Hansel & Gretel, directed by Gini Burt, with a cast primarily of 8-10 year olds. Immediatel following will be The Secret Garden, directed by Brad Storey, with a cast of 10-18 year olds.
Both plays are well known classic heartwarming tales. Most of the roles in The Secret Garden are double-cast, so each weekend will be a different performance. The two main roles are played wonderfully each weekend by 11 year old performers.
Hansel & Gretel is the story of a young brother and sister who become lost in the woods, only to stumble upon a gingerbread house, owned by a wicked witch. The children are enticed by the goodies that make up the house and don’t realize that they themselves are seen as goodies by the nasty old witch.
On a more serious note, The Secret Garden involves a young orphan girl who is sent to her wealthy uncle in an English mansion. She discovers that her cousin, a boy of the same age, has lived there believing that he is a cripple and will not live to grow up. With the help of the household staff and another boy who lives on the moor, the gardens, and the natural world, the two cousins discover the beauty of a long neglected secret garden, sharing its secret of its healing powers.
These JOLT shows will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 20th and Saturday, June 21, then again on Sunday, June 22 at 2:30 p.m. The days and times will be the same the following weekend, June 27-29. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
