The Polk County Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) hosted the Class 4A State Champion Mena Ladycat softball team for a dinner and awards ceremony at Veterans Park in Acorn on Tuesday, July 19th.
VFW Post 4451 Commander Margaret Scott opened the event by introducing the Ladycats and their coaches and praising the team for winning over 100 games with just 20 losses over the past four years. Scott introduced Don Martin who entertained the VFW guests with his rendition of Mighty Casey at Bat.
Commander Scott turned the floor over to Mena Ladycat Head Softball Coach Ray Hunter to give out the 2016 Softball Awards. “This is not one of my most favorite parts of the year,” said Hunter. “Giving individual awards goes against everything we stress as coaches to the girls. This is a team sport and we succeed or fail as a team. One individual can’t win games, it takes a complete team effort. Having said that, these girls have been selected by the conference and state tournament coaches for these awards.”
