Perhaps the first question that springs to your mind is “Why should I?” Yes, there is no admission fee to the exhibits and most of the activities that Mena Art Gallery provides to the community are free. But the answer has to do with the fact that there is still no free lunch. Someone, probably your friends and neighbors, is providing the support that makes it possible to keep the doors open.
Just like any business, your non-profit (we are a tax-deductible 501(C)3 corporation) local gallery must pay the utility bills, the telephone charges, and find the money to offer the awards that are the incentive for many artists to enter their work. We are grateful to the local businesses and individuals who make this possible and to our volunteers who are there every afternoon the gallery is open, greeting you with a smile, answering your questions about the work on display, and helping you make the occasional purchase.
But a large part of our general operating expense is met by membership fees, and membership does come with some pretty nice perks, among which is a monthly newsletter to let you know what is coming up and to give you insight into what goes on behind the scenes to make the gallery work. But the most satisfying reward is just knowing that you are doing your part to keep this gallery open to the public and bringing art to our small town.
