The Mena senior teams traveled to De Queen Monday night for make-up action and split a pair of nail biters. The Bearcats held on for a 59 to 57 victory, while the LadyCats dropped a tough 43 to 40 decision in the girls contest.
In the boys contest, Mena jumped out to a 34 to 28 halftime lead behind 15 first half points from 6’5″ junior Trey Day. The Cats maintained a six point lead at 53 to 47 after the third quarter. Then Mena held off the Leopards for the hard fought 59 to 57 victory. Day led the Bearcats with 21 points. Ashlin Powers was also in double figures with 11. Toby Watkins added eight.
In the senior girls contest, the LadyCats trailed by six at intermission 22 to 16. Mena took the lead briefly in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hang on as the Lady Leopards prevailed 43 to 40. Grayson Fairless led the LadyCats with 15 points. Maddie Lyle pitched in with eight, while Emily Leonard added seven.
De Queen and Mena will square off again Tuesday night at the Union Bank Center in Mena. The LadyCats and Lady Leopards will tip-off at 6:00. If you can’t make the game, catch it live on KENA 104.1 FM.
