BY U.S. SENATOR TOM COTTON –
Washington, D.C.— Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) announces a new partnership with the Library of Congress to donate surplus books to Arkansas public schools and libraries. The Library of Congress receives 25,000 new books every day. Duplicates are made available to members of Congress free of cost and can then be given to public schools, libraries and non-profit organizations within that member’s home state. Through the program, Arkansas schools and libraries will receive books each month on a rotating basis to encourage education and learning. The first Arkansas recipient will be Central High School in Little Rock.
“Educators have studied for years the value of a vast and diverse collection of books in the classroom. Recent studies show the more contact children have with books, the better readers they become. I know the importance of ensuring our schools have the resources and tools for optimal student achievement and believe this book donation program can make a significant difference in rural schools across Arkansas,” Cotton said.
Senator Cotton will personally drop off the first donation at Central High School in Little Rock this Thursday, August 20th to kick off the donation program. Cotton will address the student body at 1:00 PM, followed by the official first donation at 1:30 PM. All media is invited to attend.
Cotton encourages all Arkansas schools and non-profits to get involved in the program. In order to participate, an organization must fall into one of the following categories.
- Full-time, tax-supported or nonprofit educational institution: school, school system, college, university, museum, or public library
- Agency of local, state, or federal government
- Nonprofit institution or organization that has tax-exempt status under the provisions of section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 (see 41 CFR 101-44.207 (a) (17)) and that operates a library and/or research center open to the public
