Cotton Writes Secretary Kerry with Concerns About the Situation in Ukraine

Washington, D.C.—Today Congressman Tom Cotton (R-Dardanelle) along with Congressmen Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Tom Marino (R-PA), George Holding (R-NC), Randy Weber (R-TX), and Scott Perry (R-PA) sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry expressing concern over the situation in Ukraine.

Recently, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich’s halted the nation’s efforts to sign an economic accord with the European Union. Among other things, the accord would ease economic and visa restrictions and provide a gateway toward future EU membership. President Yanukovich’s decision came immediately following a reported threat from Russian President Vladimir Putin to place severe economic sanctions on Ukraine should they adopt the EU accord.

“The United States must stand with our allies in the EU and demonstrate our desire to see Ukraine continue on their path towards integration with Europe,” the letter states. “We cannot allow President Putin to undermine these efforts through the threats of economic retaliation or implied force.  We believe remaining silent on this issue sends the wrong message to our allies and erodes our strength as an economic and strategic partner.”
