Fields of Faith Returns to Bearcat Stadium

BY MELANIE BUCK –

Mena is proud to again welcome Fields of Faith to Bearcat Stadium on Wednesday, October 8. In its fourth year locally, Fields of Faith is a movement that began in 2002 when Jeff Martin, Oklahoma Fellowship of Christian Athletes Area Director, “prayed about what to do with his heartfelt frustration regarding the temptations and spiritual battles facing our more “spectator generation” youth. God led him to 2 Chronicles 34 for the answer. King Josiah, an influential teenager, gathered his people and challenged them to read God’s Word. As a result, they changed their culture.”

The plan was implemented in 2004 when over 6,000 students from Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas gathered on 23 athletic fields to invite, pray for, share with, and challenge their peers to read the Bible and follow Jesus Christ. Since that time, the event has become national and has grown to 39 states, 462 fields, and over 170,000 people gathering together to proclaim Jesus as their Savior. Thousands have come to know the Lord as a result.

The real-life impact of these gatherings, are the thousands of students that have come to know Christ. In 2011 alone, 3,993 students made first-time faith commitments; 5,205 recommitted their life to Christ; and 8,741 committed to reading the Bible daily.

In 2012, the Mena Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes led by then coach Jeff Weaver and joined by James Kelley, Victor Rowell, Brian Bowser, David McCord, Todd Aynes, and Carl Fair, all of area churches organized Mena’s first Fields of Faith event.

This year, the message will focus on “Get in the Game. Get in the Book.” This peer-to-peer movement will bring thousands of students across the country together on their school’s athletic field to share stories and challenge each other to apply the Bible as their ‘game plan for life.’

The event is inter-denominational and attracts area students and churches to Bearcat Stadium each year. In the past, schools from Polk, Sevier, Montgomery, and Scott counties, and also, from Oklahoma have attended the local Fields of Faith event. Junior high and high school students are invited to attend and bring a friend. Registration will be from 6 – 6:30 p.m. and worship and testimonies will begin 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact Bearcat Football Head Coach Tim Harper at 870-703-4711 or tim.harper@menaschools.org.
