A sport that has been growing in popularity is disc golf, including here in Polk County. If you aren’t familiar with disc golf, it has some similarities to golf in that you have greens, fairways and a target, but in this case, it’s a basket instead of a hole. Players also aren’t using standard drivers and putters that you swing, but various classes of discs or frisbees, if you will.
The Lion’s Club was converted some time back into a disc golf course. Recently, under the direction of Austin Dees, the course has gotten whipped back into shape. Cross country races have been occurring there lately, but this coming Saturday, Sept. 17, the Trilogy Challenge will be happening, launching the updated course and pro shop.
Players can visit discgolfscene.com and type “Mena” into the search tool at the top right. The Mena event is the first one to pop up at the moment and there are still plenty of spots open with availability of up to 60 competitors throughout the MA2 Intermediate, MA3 Recreational, FA Recreational Women and the MJ15 Junior 15 divisions.
The event, hosted by New Life Sports Emporium, will start sign-in at 8 a.m. There is a $35 entry fee, but the players pack outweighs the entry fee: Latitude 64 driver – Gold Saint, Westside Discs midrange – VIP Ice Tursas, Dynamic Discs putter – Prime Burst Agent, cooling towel and a flexible mini marker.
The tournament will be one round: the best score wins. There will be a bonus pack for the winner(s). Visit trilogychallenge.com to check out the player and winner packs.
The weather should be nice. It is predicted to be a minimal chance of rain, humidity around 51% and temperatures in the mid-to high 80s with a light breeze.
The Lion’s Club Course is also accepting five-year sponsorships, ranging from $50 – $100 annually, or a one-time opportunity for $1,000. It includes the sponsor’s name and logo at various locations and stays up even during tournaments and league days.
