Medi Shop Pharmacy on Highway 71 South has been a part of Mena for a long time. Today it’s owned by Bob Geyer, a well-known pharmacist in Polk County. Geyer was born and raised in this area. He graduated from Mena High School in 1973, and went to work for a company that delivered freight for a few years. But when he was in high school he had been part of a cooperative education program that had allowed him to work part time at a pharmacy in town. From that, in the back of his mind he had always carried the idea of becoming a pharmacist.
“But I also realized I didn’t want to be delivering freight for a living into my 40s, so I went back to school,” Geyer said. “I went to the University of Central Arkansas for a couple of years, then switched over to UAMS to get my pharmaceutical license. I graduated in 1993, and went to work for Mena Regional Health System for 12 years. From there, I went to Fred’s Pharmacy on Highway 71 in Mena, and was there for another 10 years. All the while I was developing a strong background and a solid knowledge in pharmaceuticals.”
In December of 2011 Geyer bought The Medi Shop, and has been there ever since.
“It was always my goal to have my own business, but in the process, the working for hospitals and retail companies gave me the experience and the confidence to start my own business,” Geyer explained. “At The Medi Shop we do some compounding – mostly hormone preparations, and we do some pharmaceuticals for animals, largely dogs and cats. We take most insurance plans and we try to be competitive with all our prices.
“We offer delivery and we have a drive-through window for customer convenience,” he added. “We have a good selection of over-the-counter products, from soft drinks and “Dear” cards, to general medications like Pepto-Bismol, aspirins, vitamins, durable medical equipment, diabetic test strips, lancets, nebulizer solutions, and much more. Most importantly I have a great staff – very courteous, friendly and knowledgeable people. They are all ready and willing to help customers find what they need.”
Geyer added that they have a special event coming up for those people who deal with diabetes. On Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Medi Sav Pharmacy in Fort Smith will be sending down representatives to help individuals with diabetes, by fitting them exactly for their diabetic-designed shoes. Geyer added that hopefully, most patients will be able to bill their Medicare Part B for this service. There will be a licensed pedorthist at the event, to insure a comfortable fitting.
“We would like to encourage everyone who suffers with diabetes to come by and take advantage of this special opportunity,” Geyer said. “And for those of you who haven’t visited our store, stop by and see what we have to offer. We’re open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.”
