Mena Police Department has issued a statement informing citizens of two phone scams that have recently been reported to authorities. A local woman reported to Mena PD that she was contacted by telephone and was advised that she was the recipient of a $10,000.00 grant from the government. She was then told to send a $250.00 money gram to them for a transaction fee.
The second instance regards individuals calling residences and claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The caller demands money, saying that a payment needs to be made online, or they ask for checking account information or credit card number. Mena PD warns that these calls are not from the IRS. The IRS works exclusively with the United States Postal Service and does not make phone calls to communicate with taxpayers.
