Judging from the people arrested, about the only crime in Polk County is drugs.
If that’s all it is, why are we spending all this money and screwing up people’s lives?
Before the drug warriors gin up too much sanctimony about my comment, here’s some reality I’d like them to respond to:
When I lived in Hollywood in the ’90’s, almost none of the street dealers would touch ketamine – street name “special K” – originally an elephant tranquilizer with a reputation for scary side-effects.
And the war on drugs did it’s job, didn’t it?
HELL NO! For one, you can still buy special K at just about any drug market in the country. But there’s more:
Academic researchers, publishing in reputable, peer-reviewed journals, have documented that ketamine is an almost miraculous short-term or emergency anti-depressant. So bunches of those people really were trying to medicate an identifiable medical condition – instead of just choosing to be addicts because they were evil.
About 20% of those with long-term chronic depression only respond to gasp – amphetamines.
And do we need to discuss the proven medical benefits of marijuana?
The “War on Drugs” is a farce, people, which has been obvious for years. It gives anal-retentive neurotics an excuse to run other people’s lives, and has turned into the most lucrative power-and-money scam in history. And the health benefits and ‘protecting the children” the warriors always peddle?
Here’s another detail, folks; Everything bad that is blamed on “DRUGS” is already illegal or subject to sanction. If someone tries to rob from me, I don’t care what he’s on – I will deal with it. But I will be damned if I will willingly spend my money to lock somebody up because he might be naughty while he’s high.
There are two drug problems in this country. There is a drug use problem, primarily because drugs are such a forbidden subject and seldom scientifically studied or rationally administered. That problem will never be “solved”, but it can be rationalized and addressed much more effectively than with guns and prisons.
But drug use is not the problem that has destroyed the social contract holding this nation together. The drug problem we can and must solve in this country is the drug corruption problem, which is pervasive throughout the drug warrior mentality. From the official thievery of “civil asset forfeiture” to trigger-happy cops kicking in wrong doors, we can put a stop to that tyranny any time the people remember who’s supposed to be in charge.
We don’t need a crusader on the bench, Andy. We need someone who listens to reality. That’s why they’re called “hearings”.
