Mena, Acorn, Cossatot River, Smithville, and Bethel Christian Schools have cancelled classes for Thursday, January 9, due to icy road conditions. Sleet and freezing rain hit the area Wednesday morning and road conditions deteriorated quickly causing all county schools to have early dismissals. The Polk County Spelling Bee scheduled for Thursday has been postponed. The new date will be announced at a later time.
Rich Mountain Community College, who had originally planned for a delayed start at 10 a.m., decided Thursday morning to go ahead and cancel all classes.
Law enforcement officials responded to multiple accidents.Sheriff Mike Godfrey is encouraging everyone to avoid travel unless necessary.
