The Polk County Quorum Court has appointed Janet Walters to fill the unexpired term of Sharon Simmons as Circuit Clerk. Simmon’s term would have expired on December 31, 2016, however, took an early retirement that went into effect on April 29, 2016. Walters was appointed by the Quorum Court on Tuesday, April 26, and has worked in the Circuit Clerk’s Office as Chief Deputy Clerk for more than 20 years and brings much experience with her.
She will fill the role until Circuit Clerk-Elect, Michelle Heath-Schnell takes over on January 1, 2017. Schnell was elected to the office in a run-off on March 22, 2016. A law on the books in the state of Arkansas keeps an incoming office holder from succeeding themselves in such a situation, leaving it up to the Polk County Quorum Court to appoint someone to the office.
